Previous jobs

2009 - 2009   Developer

Customer: Fonds voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek - Vlaanderen

Project: Migration reporting infrastructure, CV-Online, research document management system

Keywords: C#, .NET 2.0, ASP.NET, DB2, MSSQL 2005, SQL Server Reporting Services

FWO finances basic research which is aimed at moving forward the frontiers of knowledge in all disciplines. Basic research is carried out in the universities of the Flemish Community and in affiliated research institutes. Therefore the FWO is Flanders? instrument to support and stimulate fundamental research in the scope of scientific inter-university competition. Fundamental research is carried out by first-rate, highly specialised researchers. This research has a large social and cultural value and is the basis for new knowledge which is the basis to build up goal-oriented, applied, technological and strategic research. This approach adds to the well-being and it stimulates as well the concerned community as the society as a whole.

Migration of the existing reporting infrastructure to SQL Server Reporting Services. The existing reporting infrastructure was a combination of a DB2 database, a website that served as a user interface and custom C-programs. The website would launch these C-programs, which in their turn generate LaTeX. This LaTeX output was transformed to postscript and sent to the requesting user?s printer. Almost 500 reports where reviewed and were for the most part migrated to SQL Server Reporting Services.

CV-online is a solicitation web application for commissions. People who like to apply for a membership in commissions that fit their research field can fill in their profile and submit their CV. For a second round of solicitations, this web application was extended with the option to apply for an interdisciplinary commission. Also new profiles were added and some profiles had to be disabled without losing existing data.

Research for a document management system. Every e-mail received from outside has to be archived in a dossier specific for that e-mail sender. Staying in contact with over 1.500 people has been a labour-intensive manual job and archive place has its limits. In order to simplify the archiving and save storage room in the basement a document management system is required. An Outlook 2007 add-in was researched that could identify a sender, retrieve his or her employee number with corresponding mandate/project numbers so a user could quickly and partial automatically choose where to export the e-mail in a standard format on a server.

2009 - 2009   Software engineer

Customer: Delta Lloyd Bank

Role: Software engineer

Project: DLBFTP

Keywords: C#, .NET 3.5, WinForms, Console, XML, FTP, TDD, NUnit, Subversion

I created an FTP synchronization tool for Delta Lloyd Bank. This program could identify payment files (Dom80, Domestic payments, Sepa, ...) en upload these files via the FTP protocol to configured directories. Other payment files are downloaded for a full synchronization. This project was in C# using Test Driven Development (which was really fun) and open source tools like Test Driven .NET, NUnit, Subversion and Ankh.

For a new project my input was valued on solution structure and architecture. My addition was the use of Unity, MVP-VM and a code review in the first sprint.

2008 - 2008   Software engineer

Customer: Concentra

Role: Software engineer

Project: meteo, routeyou, tuub module, wedstrijdmodule and the ikwileenticket project

Role: Software engineer

Keywords: C#, .NET 3.5, ASP.NET, KenticoCMS, XML, MSSQL 2000, MSQL2005, NHibernate

Concentra makes newspapers, books, magazines, radio, TV and internet with the same focus on the communities that they serve. They are building a future based on these same values in a horizontal, decentralised organisation in which each medium receives the focus that it deserves and they think the long term and social responsibility go hand in hand.

The website www.ikwileenticket.be is a publication portal for events that are organized by Concentra partners. I used KenticoCMS as a base CMS platform. For maximum SEO result I developed a back-office  module to manage events and corresponding site structure. I also created  several front-office WebParts. Concentra provided the graphical design and implementation was done by me and a graphical designer. After going live, the website had several small updates to improve SEO.

The Wedstrijdmodule is an intranet web application that manages contests. These contests are organized by Concentra for the websites www.hbvl.be and www.gva.be. I helped refactoring this application and optimizing the database queries. I also helped redesigning the UI after talking to the users.

Tuub is a video content portal that focuses on regional content, mainly from Limburg. One of Concentra?s products is ?Het Belang van Limburg? and this product (newspaper and website) has a strong regional audience target. Therefore they wanted to integrate Tuub content with the regional websites. I created a Windows Service that reads all RSS feeds from the Tuub website, processed the video information in conjunction with reverse geocoding (via google maps REST service) to retrieve postal code and city information and stored new information in a SQL Server database. I also created the moderation Back-End application and the Viewer Front-End application.

RouteYou is a company that has built a product that is based on google maps. They use google maps to create and show routes to an end user and enrich it with extra features that provide additional information for a route or objects near that route. My task was to implement the RouteYou components and webservices  as a module that could be integrated with existing websites owned by Concentra. Website visitors could search for a specific type of route (walk, bike, motor, ?) based on their interests (distance, keywords, ?).

Meteo provides national and international weather information to their customers. My first task was to analyze, test and document their provided XML. My second task was a weather module that could be integrated with several existing websites owned by Concentra. Website visitors could check weather information for all cities in Belgium and most cities across the world.

WebShooter is a web application that is able to create a website screenshot from a url that the user provided. This screenshot, together with some extra user defined information, was used for a short list of interesting websites for the website visitors.

2007 - 2008   Developer

Customer: Acerta

Project: AccountOffice

Role: Software engineer

Keywords: C#, .NET 2.0, ASP.NET, ComponentArt, WSE, WSSF, MQseries, DB2

Acerta is a leading, modern and dynamic social services group for professionals and private persons. In order to supply additional services to external accountants, a web application was build to administer their client information. The web application is called AccountOffice and was developed during a first phase under a fixed price and fixed time engagement. AccountOffice was delivered in the beginning of 2007 within budget and time.

In a second phase, Acerta asked to add 4 back office applications for additional features to support AccountOffice. These 4 back office applications together are called the OLK suite. The OLK suite includes NDS (file management), FAC (invoice system),  TBV (payment system) and KDB (knowledge database). SocSec and SVF, 2 web service applications, and the corresponding web forms were also created to access legacy systems with client information.

My main responsibility was the implementation of the SocSec and SVF web forms (using MVP) and their corresponding web service applications (WSE, WSSF). This implementation also included using the Euricom server framework where possible, asynchronous access to the IBM MQseries to access IMS and querying DB2.

I also implemented an RSS feed in AccountOffice, helped with overall bug fixing, simplified binary repository updates and implemented a custom provider for configuration redirection.

2006 - 2007   Software engineer, only consultant on project

Customer: FWO (Fonds Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek - Vlaanderen)

Project: STORM

Role: Software engineer

Keywords: C#, .NET 2.0, WinForms, DB2, Infragistics

At the FWO (Fonds Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek) Vlaanderen I started up a project to create a new administration program to replace the existing one. The new application was developed in close collaboration with the internal employees. More than 40 persons use the system to provide services to approximately 3000 people in the academic environment. For a list of services the FWO offers: www.fwo.be

This project was developed in C# 2.0 using the Infragistics NetAdvantage Windows Forms Library and an existing DB2 database. I designed the basic architecture and coached the internal employees to make them able to offer support in the long run.

Extra

To ease development, I wanted to use the dOOdads framework as a data access layer. Because there were no DB2 templates at the current time I had to create them myself. I altered the dOOdads MyGeneration templates to make the classes compatible with DB2. Later, when the actual project started, we chose not to use the dOOdads framework. Still, it was a fun way of learning DB2 in my private time.

2004 - 2007   Lead developer

Customer: P&Q

Project: a CRM application

Role: Software engineer

Keywords: VB.NET, WinForms, Infragistics Controls, SQL Server 2000, MyGeneration dOOdads, 3-layer programming model

This project consists of a complete CRM-program for an SME in .NET containing complete history, complex address management, user locations ?. I was lead developer and coached several people during development.
